Michel Thomas (born 26 February 1958[1] or 1956[2]), better known by his pen name Michel Houellebecq (French pronunciation: [miʃɛl wɛlˈbɛk]), is a French author, filmmaker and poet. His admirers consider him a writer in the tradition of literary provocation that reaches back to the Marquis de Sade and Baudelaire, while his critics call him a peddler of sleaze and shock.[3]

Having written poetry and a biography of the horror writer H. P. Lovecraft he brought out his first novel Extension du domaine de la lutte in 1994, which was followed by Les particules élémentaires in 1998 and Plateforme in 2001.[4] After a publicity tour for this book, he moved to Ireland, where he lived for several years, before moving to Spain.[5] He won the Prix Goncourt in 2010 for La Carte et le territoire.
